Oud perfume: what to know before you buy
Oud (agarwood) is the dark, resinous heart of Middle Eastern and South Asian perfumery — smoky, slightly sweet and unmistakably luxurious. It comes from the Aquilaria tree: when the heartwood is infected, it forms a fragrant resin, and distilled, that resin becomes oud oil. In a modern Eau de Parfum it is paired with rose, saffron, leather, amber or other woody notes to soften its edge. - What does oud smell like?
- Oud smells deep, woody, smoky and resinous, with a faint sweetness and a leathery, almost animalic edge in its raw form. In modern perfumes it is softened with rose, saffron, amber or fruit, which makes it richer and easier to wear.
- When is the best time to wear oud?
- Oud is best in winter and in the evening, and at formal occasions — weddings, Eid and dinners. Its heavy, resinous character blooms in cool air but can feel heavy in peak summer heat.
- Is oud for men or women?
- Oud is traditionally worn by both. Rose-oud and fruity-oud blends are popular with men and women alike; darker, leathery ouds lean more masculine.
- What is the difference between oud perfume and attar?
- Attar is a concentrated, alcohol-free perfume oil applied by hand, while an oud Eau de Parfum is alcohol-based and sprayed. Attars sit closer to the skin; an EDP projects further and is easier to layer on clothing.
