Oud & Attar Perfumes Explained: A Beginner's Guide (Pakistan)
Quick answer: Oud is agarwood — a dark, smoky, resinous wood prized for its depth and longevity. Attar is a traditional, oil-based, usually alcohol-free perfume that sits close to the skin and lasts for hours. Pure oud and attar oils are intense, so one or two sprays is plenty. Fumie's Spogmai (Rs 4,800) is a pure oud EDP — saffron, fruity agarwood, dark rose and leather — delivering that rich, resinous depth with the easy projection of a spray.
Few scents are as loved in Pakistan as oud and attar. They carry centuries of tradition — and a depth that modern sprays struggle to match. If you're new to them, here's a clear, no-jargon guide to what they are and how to wear them.
What is oud?
Oud (also "agarwood") is a dark, resinous wood formed when a wild Aquilaria tree responds to a natural infection. The result is one of the richest, most prized materials in perfumery — warm, smoky, leathery, and deep. A little goes a long way, which is why oud-based scents are famous for their longevity and projection.
What is attar?
Attar (or ittar) is a traditional, often oil-based perfume — historically distilled from flowers, woods, and resins, with roots tracing back to Ibn Sina's rose distillations (read our Story of Scent). Because attars are concentrated oils with little or no alcohol, they sit close to the skin and last for hours.
Oud vs. modern EDP — which should you choose?
- Pure attar/oud oils: intimate, intense, very long-lasting; apply sparingly.
- A pure oud EDP like Spogmai: genuine agarwood depth in a spray that projects well and is easy to wear for events and evenings — the best of both.
- Oud-inspired EDPs: the depth of oud and woods in a spray that's easier to apply and project — great for events and evenings.
At Fumie, Spogmai — Oud of the Moon is our pure oud: saffron and fruity agarwood over dark rose and supple leather — a rich, potent EDP built for winter and weddings. Sage — Wisdom Worn offers an oud-adjacent take with saffron, suede, leather and warm woods, and for a bold leather-and-amber trail, try Baraan.
How to wear oud without overdoing it
Oud is powerful — one or two sprays is plenty. Apply to pulse points, let it settle, and don't layer it with other strong scents. In cooler weather and evenings, it truly shines.
