10 Common Perfume Mistakes to Avoid
Even a great perfume can underperform if you're wearing or storing it wrong. Most of these mistakes are easy to make — and just as easy to fix. Here are the ten most common perfume mistakes in Pakistan, and how to do it right.
The 10 mistakes
- Rubbing your wrists together. It crushes the top notes and changes the scent. Just spray and let it dry.
- Spraying into a cloud and walking through it. Most of it lands on the floor. Spray directly onto pulse points.
- Applying to dry skin. Fragrance fades fast on dry skin — moisturise first so it grips. More in how to make perfume last.
- Storing it in the bathroom. Heat and humidity ruin the oils. Keep it cool and dark — see how to store perfume.
- Over-spraying. More isn't better; it's overwhelming. Two to four sprays is plenty — see how many sprays.
- Wearing the wrong scent for the season. Heavy sweets in summer heat turn cloying; go fresh instead — see the summer guide.
- Judging a perfume in the first five minutes. The top notes aren't the real scent. Wait for the dry-down before deciding.
- Testing too many at once. After three, your nose gives up. Try two or three, max.
- Buying a weak EDT expecting all-day wear. Concentration matters — see EDP vs EDT vs attar.
- Only owning one scent. Different moods and occasions call for different scents. Build a small rotation — day, night, work, weekend.

Frequently asked questions
- Should you rub your wrists together after applying perfume?
- No. Rubbing your wrists creates friction and heat that breaks down the delicate top notes and changes how the fragrance develops. Just spray and let it dry naturally.
- Where is the worst place to store perfume?
- The bathroom. Heat, humidity and light from a bathroom or a sunny windowsill degrade the fragrance oils over time. Store perfume in a cool, dark, dry place like a drawer or cupboard.
